“What? How can that be?” is a common refrain from people discussing their taxes and seeing their draft tax return, as they sit across the desk from us.

“Things were basically the same as last year. It is impossible that I owe money this year.”

There are many myths about taxes and tax time in Canada. One of the most popular myths is that you are “entitled to a tax refund because you have always received one in the past.”

This is a common refrain from people every year. They are surprised and astonished that things are different this year.

Individuals and businesses need to remember that things are always changing, just like the tax rules in Canada, and the province that you live in.

Don’t take anything for granted especially when it comes to money and taxes. Do some homework. At a minimum, visit the Canada Revenue Agency website. Click on “what is new for personal taxes in 2016 and 2017”. There are loads of resources available that you can use, including calling our More Than Enough office for guidance.
