A couple of weeks ago I did a similar blog about lies parents believe about their students. (You can find it here.) So I thought today would be a great opportunity to explore the same topic in a different light!

As I have grown older, my parents have struggled with these concepts which are so ingrained in our culture. So without further ado, here are three lies parents believe about their child’s education.

Lie #1: Debt is a necessary evil of education today.

Lie! With the rising university costs it is easy to forget how going into debt for your education is optional, but it is optional! Your child can chose not to go into debt for university. There are people who do it, even without help from their parents.

Lie #2: If my child takes time off between high school and university they will not further their education.

Lie! Taking a year off before university can be an important learning experience for your teen. If they need time to discover what they are passionate about or want to save some money don’t worry! One year at home will allow them to embrace the things they love and see the things they don’t. Encourage space for them to explore who they are.

Lie #3: I am obligated to pay for my child’s education.

Lie! Last but most important, this lie can undermine a parents’ peace of mind. Helping your child pay for university is a privilege, if you can afford it. It is not an obligation. If your child cannot afford to pay for university on their own it is a blessing to help them, not your duty.

So relax, take a deep breath and trust God. Be open to conversation with your teen as they embark on this journey. Even if you don’t agree with their choices, trust them enough to make mistakes on their own. They will thank you for it.
