Giving from Your Assets
Giving from assets, as well as cash, are ways that Canadian families can give to local, national, and international charities. You may not have heard of “in-kind” donations, but on this week’s show Dave and Reb talk with retired financial planner John Kerr about this charitable giving option.
Cash donations are the ones commonly made to charities, but there is another kind of giving that comes out of your assets. John says that if you find yourself with a desire to give, and you have assets that you find you don’t have need of, you can make arrangements through your financial advisor or planner to donate those assets to a charity.
He tells Dave and Reb that it is a good idea to talk it over with your planner, and to also find out if the charity you want to donate to will receive “in-kind” donations. This is a form of giving that many people don’t think about.
Their discussion flows out of their thoughts on verses from Luke 12, where Jesus encourages His followers not to be greedy but be “rich towards God.” They discuss the parable of the Rich Fool and how building bigger barns and storing up earthly treasure doesn’t touch the heart of the Kingdom of God. Tune in to this show to hear more of this conversation, and learn about how you can walk through this process of giving from your assets.
