Considering the Heart of Judas

On this Good Friday morning, Dave and Reb invite Compass Canada’s Director Ray Borg into a conversation regarding the heart motivations of Judas Iscariot, one of Jesus’ twelve disciples who betrayed him for 30 pieces of silver.

Together they look at John 12:1-8, which outlines the story of the gathering of Mary, Martha, Lazarus, Judas and Jesus six days before the Passover feast. Here, Mary takes expensive perfume and pours it over Jesus’ feet in worship, and preparation for burial. Judas watches and criticizes her action’s, not because he wanted to sell the perfume and give the proceeds to the poor, but because he was a thief, and took money from the money bag.

So Judas was not concerned about Jesus, or the poor, but was greedy for money. In reflecting on this passage, Dave shares that he doesn’t think Judas set out to send Jesus to His death, but his heart was bent on money.

“We know that the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil, but Judas probably wasn’t imagining how his love of money would be one of the greatest evils,” Reb says. “In fact, he threw the money back, and ended his life, when he saw the outcome.”

The big question Dave and Reb tackle with Ray on this show, is how are we like Judas? But they also talk about how to become more like Mary.

Does our love of money affect our decisions and judgements about what is good? Do we spend time with Jesus, as Judas did, but miss seeing Him for who He truly is? Or do we spend time at Jesus’ feet as Mary did, giving the most costly things for the love of Christ?

These are important questions to consider, especially on this Easter weekend. Tune in and listen.
