It’s Not About the Money
Dave and Reb continue a conversation today, that they started with Ray Borg of Financial Discipleship Canada in May. Jesus said you cannot serve God and serve mammon at the same time. Together they dig into this teaching to uncover what it looks like when we are serving mammon.
Uncovering this subject is part of the journey that Ray has been on, as he and his colleague, Jan Kupecz from the Canadian National Christian Foundation, have written a small book (soon to be released) called It’s Not About the Money – unmasking mammon.
Ray reminds listeners that the spirit of Mammon in our world today deceives, and always wants to lead us away from God. It does that by making promises it can’t keep.
“It promises that the pursuit of pleasure, possessions and wealth will fulfill those deep longings of our heart and soul.” Reb says. “But it is just not true. They are cheap answers and imitations for the love we really need.”
Ray says we need to be careful not to give-in to these imitations.
“Mammon seeks to rob us of our relationship with God and that intimacy with Him,” he says.
To understand how Mammon is at work in our lives, Ray has created a list of “symptoms” that can help us take an honest look at how we are living.
Some symptoms of being under Mammon’s influence include:
- Worry and anxiety over money
- Money mismanagement
- Consistent financial lack
- “I can’t afford it’ mentality
- impulse buying
For the detailed list, download the Symptoms of Mammon Exercise, and answer the questions honestly, then take them to God in prayer and ask Him for help as you seek to follow Jesus alone.
