Consolation and Desolation in our Finances
Make every spending a decision a spiritual decision.
Dave shares this advice with people again and again, and on today’s radio show, “Let’s Talk Money with Dave and Reb”, they look at how our spending decisions can bring us closer to God our Father, or away from Him.
In the tradition of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, Dave and Reb consider the ideas of consolation and desolation in light of our daily financial decisions.
“Are we moving toward God in faith, love and trust, or are we moving away from Him into fear, anger and doubt when we spend money? Reb asks. “Those are the consolations and desolations.”
Dave says our financial decisions can draw us closer to Him or away from Him.
“We want to be moving toward God’s active presence in the world, not away from it,” he says.
Rev. Ray Borg from Financial Discipleship Canada joins the conversation and shares from his own experiences of how he has experienced both consolations and desolations, and how both have taught him about intimacy with God.
Their discussion reflects the verses found in Luke 16 when Jesus reminds His followers that we cannot serve God and mammon.
“Jesus’ words still echo to us today,” Reb says. “We cannot serve two masters for either we will love and serve one and hate the other, or we will love and serve the other. We want to be serving Him everyday in our financial decisions, but it is a learning process that isn’t always easy.”
Tune in to the show to hear their conversation, and how it is possible to serve God alone.
