It takes Gazelle intensity to get out of debt, we have heard Dave Ramsey say. And on today’s show Dave and Reb speak with Rev. Ray Borg about what that looks like in every day life.
Based on the verse found in Proverbs 6:5, fleeing debt is a serious principle God gives us to live by. “Deliver yourself like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter,
And like a bird from the hand of the fowler”, the Scripture reads.
“This means looking at our vulnerable areas, places where we spend money to self-nurture, and putting a safe-guard in place so we don’t end up in debt,” Ray says. “We need to look at the places where we freely spend our money where maybe we shouldn’t.”
In part, running like a gazelle, means having multiple strategies working together to help us dig out of debt and stay out of debt.
That includes:
- Taking responsibility for your current reality.
- Selling items around the house to earn income.
- Avoiding places that you know are a weakness for excessive spending.
- Finding extra work, or working extra shifts, to pay down debt.
- Looking into resources to help you practically and spiritually – resources that help you track spending, or create spending accountability, or that teach you about God’s principles around money.
“Running like a gazelle isn’t just running in one straight line, or doing just one thing to get out of debt,” Dave says. “If that were the case, the gazelle could never outrun the hunter. Instead they learn to zig-zag. And that is what we need to learn to do in our finances; zig-zag out of debt by using several practical tips at the same time.”
