On today’s show, Dave and Reb revisit the topic of reference points and look at how our money stories, and where we come from financially, need to be understood so we can have a healthy financial reference point from our past. They also dig into Romans 12:1 and 2, and the idea of presenting ourselves to God at the beginning of every day as part of having transformed thinking in our finances.
“Imagine yourself every morning at the end of your bed, surrendering your day to God and yielding to Him simply by raising your head and your hands to heaven,” Reb says. “It shifts your focus right at the beginning of the day and reminds us who is really in charge.”
As part of this surrender, Dave and Reb encourage listeners to look at where they come from financially. Did you hear your parents talk about money? Did you have what you needed growing up? Or did you feel that there was lack? Understanding your past relationship with money will help you understand your present behaviour.
“When you understand your behaviour in light of your history with money, it can create some amazing ‘A-Ha’ moments in your life, and can lead to a change in behaviour,” Dave says.
So along with surrendering your daily life to Christ, Dave and Reb recommend taking some time to write out your money story (see today’s blog), and then sharing that story with your spouse or family.
“It’s important to remember that your past debt behaviour doesn’t have to determine your future,” Reb says. “That is why daily surrender is so important. God can re-define it all if you let Him.”
