Rev. Ray Borg of Financial Discipleship Canada (notmine.ca) joins Dave and Reb on “Let’s Talk Money” today to talk about how the love of money affects our lives. Based on the letter written by the Apostle Paul to Timothy, the passage from 1 Timothy 6 challenges God’s people to focus on righteousness, goodness, and sharing what we have, rather than focusing on the temporary rewards of money.
1 Timothy 6:6-10 says, “But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. (NIV)
This love of money discussion is not an easy one, but Dave and Reb agree with Rev. Borg that it is about the posture of the heart and how we understand who we are, and who we understand God to be.
“When I think of love, I think of passion and longing, and how we are seduced,” Rev. Borg says. “The thing we love becomes the central focus.”
Reb says this issue of the heart around money and God is like walking a tightrope, because it is not always clear what is motivating us. Is it God or money? Tune in to hear more of their conversation as they unpack how contentment is a great litmus test for discovering if we are serving God or money.
