Rich.
What does the word really mean?
The dictionary defines rich as “Having wealth or great possessions; abundantly supplied with resources, means or funds; wealthy.”
Yet this definition seems too vague to describe a word which drives our North American culture. When you break down the word rich, you will find each person has a unique vision of what this word looks like.
To some it is a dollar amount in their bank account, to others it is ensuring their children are involved in as many activities as they desire. Sometimes it means retiring well or going on beautiful vacations, but is this real richness?
When stated in this blatantly derogatory light, most would disagree. The entertainment industry features movies and stories which affirm the importance of family, peace, joy and love in being truly rich.
This leaves us with two definitions of wealth: monetary and relational.
Many people combine these two definitions and seek a Garden of Eden where physical prosperity joins with relational connectivity. Let me be clear. Valuing your loved ones and stewarding your resources are good things.
The problem is our fascination with being rich.
Wake up!
Our world is in financial distress. Our neighbours, co-workers and family need the hope of Christ. Rather than focusing on what true wealth is, we need to wake up to the needs around us. Financial difficulties are often an open door for offering the hope and peace of God.
Be Generous!
We have so much to be thankful for, no matter what our situation. Whether it is through time, money or sharing our story, we all have something to offer the Lord and others. Don’t disqualify yourself from the opportunity to be generous.
Reach Out!
As Christians we offer thousands of excuses about why we don’t share our faith with others.
“It isn’t the right time.”
“They aren’t ready for it.”
“I have no opportunity to do so.” And these are only a few examples.
Look for opportunities and God will prepare their hearts. The people who matter most to us need our courage and boldness, not fear.
Don’t wait out of fear.
Sometimes being prepared to open our mouths is all it takes.
This worldview shift does not happen overnight. We need to constantly remind ourselves that our priority is not ‘richness’ but a pursuit of the kingdom of God.
