The Why and How of Debt

Dave and Reb start a month-long conversation about why we get into debt and how we can deal with our hearts as we tackle getting out of debt.

This week’s topic looks at our appetites and longings, and the things we fill our lives with to satisfy those appetites and longings. Everything from food to furniture, cars to vacations, may be a part of the list of possessions and experiences we pursue, even if we don’t have the money. In God’s Word, we are taught that “the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life” don’t come from God. He warns us not to love the world or anything in the world. (See 1 John 2)

Heeding this warning, Dave and Reb try to unpack the effects of feeding our appetites with temporal things, like debt and the continuing pursuit of pleasure. While none of these “things” in and of themselves is wrong, if we use them to satisfy the struggles of our heart, then we need to stop and consider what we are doing.

Debt can be the greatest outcome of fulfilling these appetites, Dave says. “I encourage everyone to take time with God and to truly face what is going on in their hearts and their bank accounts.”
