From Winter to Spring

Award-winning singer-songwriter and worship leader Brian Doerksen joins Dave and Reb on the show to encourage people on their spiritual and financial journeys.

Brian recently released the album “Grateful” following a number of years in what he calls a season of winter in his life, when he thought his gift for writing new and fresh songs had ended. Despite the struggle of the winter and his lack of faith in himself, he did start writing music again and winter came to an end.

He admits that winters are dark places to dwell, and one can wonder if barren seasons will ever end. In his case, he also blamed himself for the onset of winter, as a partnership and relationship he had trusted turned into many difficulties.

“My sensitive, artistic soul started to get crushed as I tried to hang on, as I tried to make it all work. Finally I couldn’t make it work and I had to let it go and there I was with the consequences of my own limits,” he says.

Through the journey he learned that you have to be honest with yourself, and also trust a few significant people who will stand with you.

“You can’t force spring to happen,’ he says. “You can’t take your barren tree, so to speak of your life, and glue on some leaves and paste a smile on your face and pretend you’re in spring when you are not. The first thing is to be honest about where you are. It is so foundational. Be honest with somebody else, with yourself, with a trusted friend, with a financial counsellor – with someone to say this is my situation.”

Gratitude is also key, not only in your winter seasons, but in any financial difficulties. Dave says it is important to look up to God, and look around at what you have been given, even when things are hard.

In his song “Million Miracles”, Brian expresses this truth – we are surrounded every day by gifts from God’s hearts.

“We are literally bombarded every day by gift after gift after gift,” he shares with Dave and Reb. “They don’t come with deb-strings attached either. They are gifts poured out from a loving Creator.”
