Getting Your Financial House in Order

After coming through the tornadoes and storms of the past weekend, Dave and Reb have a conversation today about their own reactions to the warnings and the traumatic situations that have hit the Ottawa area.

Drawing a comparison to financial adversity and the unknown future, they challenge listeners to “get their own houses in order” by heeding the warnings they can find in their financial stories. They do so by focusing on the story of King Hezekiah from Isaiah 38.

King Hezekiah was sick when Isaiah came and told him that he needed to get his house in order because he was about to die. After calling on the Lord, praying and weeping bitterly, God gave Hezekiah 15 more years of life.

“Sometimes that is not the answer we get when we are told to get our house in order,” Reb says. “But the warning still holds true for us today. God warns us so that we avoid adversity and further devastation in the future.”

When the tornadoes hit last weekend, Environment Canada gave warnings at least 10 minutes in advance so that we could find shelter. But Dave and Reb were among those that didn’t take the warnings seriously at first.

“Warnings don’t save lives, unless action is taken, and the people being warned follow through by finding shelter,” Dave says. “The same holds true in finances. Safety is found and adversity is avoided, when you act on the warning signs and caution flags found in Scripture and your own finances.”
