What does it mean to be successful? What does it look like to give and be generous from your heart?

On this week’s show, Dave and Reb take a look at what it looks like to be “successful” and how we need to check the motivations of our heart when we define success, especially in light of how and what we give our money to.

They talk about how pride can sneak into our lives when it comes to giving. Matthew 6 calls us to lay up treasures in heaven but Dave and Reb encourage listeners to “check your heart” when it comes to the motivation behind giving.

“Sometimes I want to be noticed in my giving, or given a ‘pat’ on the back,” Reb says. “But God says we should give only for the audience of One; God’s opinion is the only one that matters.”

Pride can be a tricky thing to navigate because it is sneaky and we may be unaware of its effects.

Dave encourages listeners to give, not for their own pleasures but to give with honest hearts to meet the needs of others.

“The kind of giving God mentions in Isaiah 58 is something we need to meditate on,” Dave says.

“Is this not the fast that I have chosen:
To loose the bonds of wickedness,
To undo the heavy burdens,
To let the oppressed go free,
And that you break every yoke?
Is it not to share your bread with the hungry,
And that you bring to your house the poor who are cast out;
When you see the naked, that you cover him,
And not hide yourself from your own flesh?
Then your light shall break forth like the morning,
Your healing shall spring forth speedily,
And your righteousness shall go before you;
The glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard.”
