Rev. Ray Borg from Financial Discipleship Canada, and notmine.ca joins Dave and Reb to unpack what it means when God says in the book of Proverbs that the “borrower is slave to the lender”. Together, they look at how to determine if you are under the weight of debt, and how that weight affects your day-to-day living.

“Debt is the default of our culture,” Ray says. “And we have to wonder why we are putting ourselves in slavery.”

So much of these issues of enslavement around money are about our inability to “tell” our money where to go. Instead, our money “tells” us what to do, just as a slave-owner tells a slave. There is no freedom in indebtedness.

“You lose your ability to direct the money put into your hand,” Dave says. “He who has the money makes the rules, and when we owe money we are under that rule.”

Rev. Borg suggests that there are a few ways we can “tell” if we are enslaved under the weight of debt.

  • We dread bills that come in the mail.
  • We won’t open bills.
  • We are always checking our bank account.
  • We use one form of credit to pay off another: “Robbing Peter to pay Paul.”
  • We have anxiety at night, and we also daydream about winning the lottery.

To hear more about this weight of debt, and how you can get free from this type of enslavement, listen in.
